Creating contentment (santosa) There is no greater misery than not feeling content. Tao Te Ching Conversely, there is no greater joy than feeling content. When one feels that one has and is all one can possibly have and be in that very moment, then all desires fall away and inner peace dawns. This is true wealth. According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, as explained by Swami Venkatesananda, "In order to practise contentment one has to be aware of the arising of discontent all the time. " In our society, ambition is highly regarded as a key to success and prosperity. He explains that, "It is work that brings success and prosperity. Ambition often acts as a distracting influence which dissipates one's energies while contentment turns you within and preserves your energies." Then one is even more focussed, has more enthusiasm and more energy for the work which needs to be done. But how to achieve contentment? Swami Venkatesananda says "Do not try to cultivate it, watch to see if it is there in you. If it is there you are heading in the right direction; if it is not there, something is wrong somewhere else." The first five limbs of Yoga, as explained in the Yoga Sutras, create an environment in which contentment can blossom. They are non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, constantly turning the mind towards the Infinite, and non-greed. May you and all beings experience deep contentment.
